Students tackle textile waste with social enterprise, Shinely

Social Enterprise Youth

In 2021, Young Change Agents ran the Future of Fashion Youth Design Challenge. The challenge asked young people aged 10-21 to consider the following question: "How might we innovate the fashion industry to transform the way we create, purchase, and use fashion for work, study, and play?"

Samera and Freshta from Para Hills High School in South Australia participated in the challenge. The problem they identified was that too many clothes end up in landfill. To address this problem, Samera and Freshta came up with Shinely. Shinely is a social enterprise that upcycles and repurposes old clothing so that it can be given a second life. A portion of the profits will also go towards helping Afghan refugees like Samera and Freshta.

Since being selected as a Judge's Choice in the design challenge, the team from Shinely have attended a Fashion Industries networking event run by the Department for Innovation and Skills.
