Challenge Details

Australia’s regions are vast, vibrant, and essential to the nation’s identity. From sweeping plains to rugged coastlines, the diversity of landscapes reflects the rich culture and history of the people who call these places home.

Young people in regional areas grow up in environments that offer unique experiences. Here, they learn in close-knit schools, play in open spaces surrounded by natural beauty, and work in industries that fuel local economies, like agriculture, mining, and tourism. These young Australians build strong connections with their surroundings, embracing both the freedom and the responsibilities that come with living in regional communities.

However, regional youth face challenges that differ from those in metropolitan areas.

  • Regional and remote students are about half as likely to attend university as students in urban areas (National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education (NCSEHE) 2022).
  • Regional areas generally have a higher youth unemployment rate, with some areas experiencing nearly double the national average (Youth Employment in Australia, Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business, 2023)
  • Regional Australians experience higher rates of chronic health conditions and limited access to healthcare, with around 28% of regional residents having to travel over an hour to see a specialist (Rural Doctors Association of Australia, 2022)
  • Only 77% of regional households have access to the internet, compared to 90% of households in metropolitan areas (Australian Digital Inclusion Index, 2022).
  • Young people in regional areas are more likely to report a desire to work on environmental and climate issues, with 70% stating they want to see more local action on climate change (Australian Youth Climate Coalition, 2022)

Despite these challenges, regional youth are resilient, resourceful, and have a deep sense of community. They are the future stewards of their regions, holding the potential to drive meaningful change though diversity, adaptability, and local strengths.

Your Challenge
Imagine it's the year 2035. Your regional community is healthier, happier and even more connected. Your challenge is to identify problems that might prevent this future, then create your solution!

Between January & October 2025, we will be challenging young people aged 10-21 across Australia to ideate solutions to reimagine the future of their region.

As part of this challenge, we're asking young people to focus on one of six key themes:

  1. Connection: How might we improve digital and physical connection in regional Australia to strengthen communities?
  2. Resilience: How might we make our regions more resilient to disasters?
  3. Career Opportunities: How might we create accessible, future-focused employment opportunities that keep young people in the regions?
  4. Health: How might we improve access to quality healthcare in regional Australia?
  5. Food Growth and Production: How might we improve the lives of farming families & communities?
  6. First Nations: How might we celebrate and preserve First Nations culture in our regions?

Read on to find out more about the challenge, including our challenge judges, prizes and resources!
