What is the problem you found?

How might we remove the harmful stigmas associated with someone's cultural identity? Racial stigmas cause many long-lasting damaging effects on one's wellbeing. There are many stereotypes related to a certain ethnicity/culture/race that most people are not aware of. We discovered that the root cause of these racial stigmas has been caused by internalised racism, resulting in the corruption of believing that it is ok to side with these stereotypes.

Customer / Problem

Our target customers are anybody who would like to learn more about different cultures. Another target audience is people who do not acknowledge other cultures in Wagga. We are under the impression that often this appreciation comes from the upbringing or discipline of generations being brought up. Customers would like to see this display as it is not only educational for all ages but also engaging and interesting. Although Wagga is a town prided on being multiculturally diverse, customers and consumers may face problems such as racism which is due to the lack of education about racial stigmas which face society.

What Is Your Solution?

To overcome our problem, we decided that educating the community is the most effective solution to removing racial stigmas. Our solution is to create a permanent display in which significant cultural items are being put on view. This encourages the visitors to educate themselves on different cultures through a positive and engaging atmosphere. Every once a month there will be an auction in which multicultural artists can sell their work. Sometimes people don't get the opportunity to sell their items, or they can get looked down upon because of their cultural identity, which is why this is a great addition to encourage the community. Stalls selling traditional items and pieces of handcrafted goods to the community is another way to encourage the community. Hands-on workshops will also be occurring every month to encourage people to learn how to make traditional items and learn cultural dances. Another benefit of the display is that schools can visit the exhibit for school excursions which can help educate the younger generations.

Support Required

Connections

The exhibit will be funded by the multicultural council in Wagga Wagga to make sure that the present and future endeavours of the exhibit are made into reality. The centre will also be open to volunteers from the community to help out and manage the centre whenever possible.

Funding

To cover the hiring cost and maintenance fees of the display, some funding support will be required. Whether it's through community donations or the revenue collected through the exhibit. The exhibit will be funded by the multicultural council in Wagga, which will support the venue. 10% of the artist's earnings through selling and auctioning off their creations will go back to the museum to help with the revenue and costs of the exhibit, whilst 90% of their profits will go directly to the creator.
