What is the problem you found?

We found food waste from supermarkets throwing out imperfect fruit to be a big problem. Supermarkets are throwing away a lot of perfectly good food because it doesn't look perfect. They have very high standards about what foods, such as fruit and vegetables, have to look like to be sold and, as such, "ugly" fruit is going to waste.

We also found that supermarkets are still using plastic to wrap and package their fruit and vegetables!

What is your opportunity?

How might we minimise food waste and reduce plastic usage from supermarkets?

Who is your audience?

Our target market is supermarkets and environmentally conscious customers who want to help reduce food and plastic waste.

What Is Your Solution?

Our solution is a bag made of fruit and vegetable fibres from unused fruit. We will sell this to supermarkets as packaging for their fruits and vegetables and to be sold to their customers as an alternative to plastic or re-usable bags, which are often made of unsustainable material. We will be saving waste in two ways; firstly by using the fruit that would otherwise go to waste and secondly by providing a more sustainable alternative to plastic and reusable shopping bags.

Support Required

Connections

We would like to talk to large and small supermarkets to determine whether this would be something that they are interested in supporting.
